HOUMA, La. — Ravi Sangisetty, Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in the Louisiana Third District, said the federal government has issued a death sentence to South Louisiana’s economy.

“Last night the President went on TV and said, ‘If something isn’t working, we want to hear about it,’” Sangisetty said. “Well, because of the federal government and BP, the list of things that aren’t working is pretty long. The federal government’s moratorium means the oil rigs aren’t working; failure to regulate BP means now the Gulf is full of oil; the oil means the fishermen aren’t working; that means our restaurants and tourism industries aren’t working. Mr. President, the federal government stopped South Louisiana from working.”

Sangisetty said that safety must be ensured on the deepwater rigs in a matter of days, not months. He also said that domestic oil is key to our national economy and security.

“The President chastised America for sending a billion dollars a day to foreign countries for their oil,” Sangisetty said. “Domestic oil is a perfect way to counter that, however our ability to drill our own oil has been crippled because Washington is broken. We have a serious problem down here. We need a solution for coastal economy that puts South Louisiana back to work now.”

‘Get these crews back to work’

HOUMA, LA – Ravi Sangisetty, Democratic candidate for Congress in the Louisiana Third District, said the recent moratorium on deep-water drilling in the Gulf is not a solution and immediate action must be taken to get the rigs up to standard and back to work.

“The moratorium is not a solution for the economy of this region or for domestic energy in the country. A six month delay will compound a national tragedy by creating a local and regional economic collapse,” Sangisetty said.  “The rigs need to be inspected in the next 45 days and the moratorium lifted by July 31st.  Send BP the bill.”

 Sangisetty continued, “Here’s what they don’t understand in Washington.  We are talking about whole communities that depend on the oil industry.  This made-for-TV moratorium won’t just kill jobs in the oil industry, it will bankrupt retail stores, restaurants, car and boat dealerships, grocery stores.  It hurts every business, every family in South Louisiana. Even local governments will begin to suffer as our economy gets hammered by the excessive and ill-conceived moratorium.  Washington is broken and playing politics with peoples’ lives.”

With the fishing and tourism industries of South Louisiana already facing enormous hardships from the spill, the moratorium is the final straw in shutting down the economy in the Gulf Coast communities.

“Get these inspectors mobilized, get the rigs up to the highest safety standards, and get these crews back to work doing what we do better than anyone else in the world.”

“Opening up our coast for shallow water drilling is safe and will bring jobs to the area,” Sangisetty said. “This is a great improvement after President Obama put a hold on our economy with his moratorium on drilling. We don’t need to punish safe drillers for BP’s irresponsibility.”

South Louisiana doesn’t need an economic disaster added to its ecological disaster, Sangisetty said. The Louisiana Economic Development Secretary, Stephen Moret, said the moratorium will cost Louisiana between 3,000 and 6,000 jobs in the short term and up to 20,000 over the next year and a half.

“Six weeks ago, South Louisiana had the lowest unemployment in the country. Then BP ruined our fishing industry, and now Washington is hurting our energy industry,” Sangisetty said. “We were doing fine down here on our own, but because BP chose a quick buck over safety on the Deepwater Horizon rig, we have an environmental disaster on our hands, and many of our safe, responsible drillers are being punished for someone else’s carelessness.”

Sangisetty said most offshore rigs are safe and provide energy for the United States without sending money overseas. Domestic oil must be a part of our energy future, and we must make sure that it is done safely, he said. There should be no such thing as optional safety regulations. When it comes to the lives of our workers and our coast, safety isn’t optional.
